More Questions

When Can I Audition?

Our Standing Rules require that you attend 4 rehearsals in order to be eligible to audition. If circumstances require an earlier audition an exception can be made.

When can I perform with the chorus?

We have performing opportunities throughout the year. As you learn the repertoire, we require that you "pass" each song by recording yourself singing on the risers with the chorus and have that recording evaluated by your Section Tape Listener to be sure you are singing the right notes and words. No one sings wrong notes on purpose, but it happens occasionally.

I Can't read music, is that a requirement?

No. Since we provide learning CD's for our songs for you to learn from and to listen to periodically as a refresher, reading music is not required. We also have "sectionals" and, some times, small group rehearsals which help us solidify our music.  You will need an MP3 digital recorder/player to make your recordings.

Are there some events during year that have particular significance?

Yes. The Sweet Adeline calendar runs on a fiscal year beginning in May and ending in April. The culmination of our year is Regional Competition generally held sometime in March or April, and takes place in North Carolina. Choruses in our Region #14 perform two songs for a panel of 4 Internationally Certified Judges. In preparation for this contest, we will have a weekend competition retreat which requires mandatory attendance through the entire retreat. The retreat takes place usually in February, out of the greater Richmond area, usually in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Some time during the weekend we manage to get some partying in, too.

The chorus earning a first place medal at regional competitions  is entitled to compete in the International Competition occurring between October or November of the following year. Greater Richmond has competed internationally 5 times in: Atlanta, Nashville, Las Vegas, Hawaii, and Seattle.

During the month of June we put on our Annual Show. This is a full stage production at a local venue where we sell tickets and have special guests share the stage with us.

Our Regional faculty provide several educational opportunities during the year. These consist of workshops to further your barbershop education and range from vocal production, arranging, etc. Our region consists of choruses from Virginia, North and South Carolina, and Tennessee. These events are usually held at a place convenient to most singers in our region. There will be some "partying" going on at these events as well.

Not every member is able to attend every event that happen during the year. All of us have families, jobs, and other commitments which make it impossible to participate. Mark your calendar and decide what you can do and then enjoy the opportunities available to you as a member of Greater Richmond Chorus.
